Anyone for cricket? In the UK there are over 5,000 cricket clubs, many of which will train and play during some of the warmest months of the year, April to September.

Proud to have sponsored Sussex and Gloucester cricket clubs, Green People is passionate about keeping fans and players sun safe during the cricket season.

In this post we help you to choose the best sunscreen for cricketers and spectators, both for in the UK and when travelling on cricket test tours.

What’s the best sunscreen for cricketers?

The ECB (English Cricket Board) encourages cricket players and spectators to apply a broad-spectrum SPF30 sunscreen and re-apply regularly.

But which cricket sunscreen should you choose? And when should you apply it?

Zinc Oxide sunscreen: the cricketer's choice

Because cricketers spend a lot of time out on the field, many opt to protect their skin with a water-repellent Zinc Oxide sunscreen.

Zinc Oxide forms a protective layer on the skin, deflecting UVA and UVB rays. This offers immediate defence with a greater staying power than chemical sunscreens.

Zinc Oxide sunscreens will usually keep working as long as they remain on the skin but everyone should reapply their SPF every few hours.

Looking for a Zinc Oxide cricket sunscreen? Look no further than Green People. Our 100% mineral sunscreen is naturally water-repellent and give high-factor SPF30 protection to the face and body.

Sun cream for cricket tours and sports holidays

Planning on a Test Series trip abroad? Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Australia and Africa all offer unforgettable cricket experiences, but boy can they be hot!

Here's what to pack when watching an international cricket match:

  • High-factor SPF30 sunscreen: You’ll need around 30ml of SPF30 to protect from head to toe so pack plenty of SPF and seek out shade during the warmest hours of the day (11am to 3pm).

  • Mosquito repellent: If your destination has a risk of Dengue Fever (like India or Sri Lanka), mosquito repellent is another cricket player and spectator must-have.

For dual defence during floodlight cricket matches, we offer a 2-in-1 SPF15 with Natural Insect Repellent.

Ideal for protecting your skin during late afternoon and early evening play, Zinc Oxide SPF15 shields against sun damage while Citrepel®75, derived from Java Citronella, offers protection against mosquitoes, midges and biting insects for up to 4 hours.

More ways to stay safe in the sun at the cricket

  • A broad-rimmed sun hat: SPF should be applied to your face and neck, but you can further shield these from strong sunlight by wearing a cricket sun hat.
  • Polo shirts: Breathable cotton clothing like cotton polo shirts are perfect for spectating cricket matches. When things heat up, copy the pros and pop your colour to help shield your neck from the sun.
  • Sunglasses: Improve your view of the scoreboard as you protect your eyes from sunlight and pack a good pair of sunglasses.
