If you have sensitive skin, you might want to try a bath for a skin-soothing moment of calm. However, for some people it can be a trigger for irritation, redness or itchy so getting it right takes a little thought.

At Green People, we create organic skin care that is truly kind to your skin. Transform your bathtime into a world of calm and comfort with our range of scent-free bath and body products designed especially for sensitive skin.

At a glance:

  • Run a lukewarm bath - test with your wrist or elbow
  • Add a few capfuls of sensitive bath oil to the water, or a small amount of sensitive bubble bath
  • Soak for no longer than 10–15 minutes
  • Best bath oil for sensitive skin: Alexandra Kay Time to Soothe Oil
  • Best bubble bath for sensitive skin: Scent Free Shower Gel
  • Best post-bath sensitive body lotion: Scent Free Body Lotion

Why baths can be tricky for sensitive skin

It might sound strange, but water itself can be surprisingly drying on your skin. Prolonged soaking disrupts the outermost layer of skin which leads to increased moisture loss after you get out. This can leave your skin feeling dry, sensitive or out of balance.

Add hot water, fragranced products, or harsh ingredients into the mix, and sensitive skin can feel tight, itchy or inflamed before you've even dried off. However, with the right approach, baths can actually help sensitive skin rather than causing discomfort.

Getting the temperature right

Using water that’s too hot is one of the most common bathtime mistakes for sensitive skin. It strips away the skin’s natural oils and can increase inflammation and the urge to scratch.

Aim for water that’s comfortable without being steaming hot. Test the water on the inside of your wrist or elbow where your skin is most sensitive - if it feels noticeably hot, it’s too hot.

Try and keep your soak to around 10–15 minutes. Any longer and the water begins to work against your skin rather than for it, especially if the water is hot.

Choosing the right products for our bath soak

This is where sensitive bath products make all the difference. Common bubble baths and foaming bath soaks are often loaded with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and synthetic fragrance to add bubbles and a nice smell when you bathe.

However, both are well-known for causing irritation to reactive or sensitive skin. For a truly gentle sensitive bath soak, you want to look for products that are fragrance-free, free from harsh surfactants (like SLS) and formulated with skin-kind ingredients.

Best bath oil for sensitive skin

Adding a bath oil to your water is a wonderful way to counter the drying effects of soaking. A good bath oil for sensitive skin creates a fine layer on the water that coats the skin as you bathe, leaving it feeling soft and nourished.

Our Alexandra Kay Time to Soothe Scent Free Body Oil is a wonderful scent-free bath oil that’s made to comfort the skin. Made with a patented Patchouli active called CB2-Skin™ Biofunctional, along with restorative Hemp and natural plant oils, it gently nourishes and soothes sensitive skin while you bathe.

If you'd prefer a little more lather in your bath, our Scent Free Shower Gel can double up as a sensitive bubble bath. Add a small amount under running water as the bath fills for a foamy soak without the irritation.

It’s fragrance-free, with no SLS that can cause skin irritation - we use gentle, natural Yucca to create a rich foam instead.  It’s also made with skin-soothing Aloe Vera and Prebiotics to get sensitive skin back in balance.

This product makes a great bubble bath and leaves my skin soft and hydrated. A little goes a long way. I most certainly will be ordering it again.Susan

Your post-bath sensitive skin lotion

Pat (don't rub) your skin dry with a soft towel, leaving it slightly damp. Then, within a few minutes of getting out, apply our Scent Free Body Lotion to soften, soothe and moisturise with natural Shea Butter, Squalane, Chamomile Oil and Inulin Prebiotics.

This is when your skin is ready to absorb moisture and when applying an emollient is most effective at locking hydration in. Waiting too long or completely drying your skin first means that moisture evaporates rather than being sealed into the skin.

“Green people really understand what it’s like to suffer with eczema. This is a lovely scent free body lotion that soothes and calms my skin.Susan
